Liquid Landscape Designs

The Kendall Project

Description:

An upper formal pond designed with hard lines and a lower natural pond with a bog garden joined by a stream with two falls that passes under the new house addition.

Approximate Size:

Upper pond 17’ x 46’, Lower pond 29’ x 35’ (+ bog garden), and the stream is about 20’ in length

Number Of Waterfalls:

2; one is formal the other is natural.

Fish:

Yes, initially stocked with a dozen imported koi of ranging colors

Equipment Used:

3,000 sq ft .45mil EPDM liner & Geotextile underlay fabric, 12,000+ gph pump, Pan Intercorp Commercial Ultraviolet (U.V.) Light (rated for 20,000+ gallons)

Design Considerations:

To construct the pond in the vision of both the homeowner and the architectural designer, Debbie Bentley of Bentley Design Associates in Carlisle.

Construction Challenges:

There were quite a few. First, lining the upper pond with its rigid, straight lines and managing to work around the mahogany bridge already in place. Second, constructing the top falls, with the heavy water flow, without any water loss resulting from splash and managing to hide any lining material against a straight vertical wall. Moving materials down to the lower pond, without the aid of machines due to lack of any access at that point, especially the very heavy and large amount of liner that was needed.
