The Brattle Project

Size: 14 Images     Created: 20-03-2008

Description:

A watercourse created in a city backyard with a bluestone stepping stone pathway, consisting of two very large bluestone rill stones which create a rather dramatic choke point in the waters flow.

Approximate Size:

15' x 45', consisting of three pools with water courses linking them

Number Of Waterfalls:

One large falls, splitting into two each containing multiple steps.

Fish:

To be stocked in 2008!

Equipment Used:

EPDM Rubber liner and Geotextile Underlay fabric, Savio Skimmerfilter, 4000 gph submersible pump, AquatiConcepts Top Filterfalls

Design Considerations:

The major design considerations were the two rillstones' placement and creating the entire grade to support the proper movement of such a long course in a completely flat urban backyard setting. The rill stones needed exact placement to restrict the flow just enough to create the visual look we set out to achieve while still accounting for proper turn over rate. It really required us to get the math right before we started to build to hold the right degree pitch throughout the feature. Project designed by Bill Phinney (LA) Bill Phinney Landscape Design, Wiscasset, ME. Landscape Construction by A Blade of Grass, Wayland, MA

Construction Challenges:

THE MAMMOUTH RILL STONES! Weighing in at about 800 lbs a piece, setting the two stones (each of which were 10" thick) needed to be exact without much adjustment to reduce the chance of any damge to the liner.
